Description of Services

The Assessor's Office is responsible for the valuation of Lexington's real and personal property. The Town Assessor is appointed by the Town Manager and supervised by the Assistant Town Manager for Finance.  The Town Manager also appoints a three-member Board of Assessors to review requests for abatements, approve tax exemptions, and provide policy guidance regarding the operations of the Assessor's Office.

The Assessing staff collect, compile, and verify data for the valuation of all real estate and personal property.  According to Massachusetts General Laws, assessments must undergo a recertification program every third year that is audited and certified by the Department of Revenue (D.O.R.). Additionally, Lexington annually updates the values. The updated values must be approved by the D.O.R each year.  Values are adjusted annually to reflect market value as of the assessment date.
