GROUNDS
 | Consider installing a fence around the property.

| Trim all shrubbery, especially if close to doors and windows.

| Install exterior lighting.
|
| Avoid using trellises under windows.
|
| Put away tools and ladders that may be used by a thief or stolen
|
DOORS
| Add a security strikeplate to prevent door from being kicked in.
|
| Replace doorknob locks with deadbolts.
|
| Entrance doors should be 1 1/2" thick minimum, made of solid wood or metal.
|
| Change doors with hinges on outside.
|
| Use a bar-type lock on sliding glass doors.
|
| Remember, locks can't work if not used.
|
| Don't forget to also lock garage door.
|
| Consider installing iron grates on street level windows. These should have a quick
release for easy emergency exits. Never leave a key under mat or in the mailbox.
|
| Never give a copy of your key to maintenance or delivery people.
|
| Re-key all locks when moving into a new home or apartment.
|
| Never put I.D. tags on keys.
|
GENERAL
| Check into neighbor watch and I.D. programs at your local police department.

WlNDOWS
| Use auxiliary locks on windows. Standard locks are easily sprung.

| Install pin locks in wooden sash.
|
| Locks don't work if not used.
|
ALARMS
| Consider adding an alarm system. Consult an expert for advice.

| A barking dog makes a good alarm.
|
VACATION
| Ask a neighbor to watch your house.
|
| Place shades at daytime level.
|
| Take any firearms to police to hold.
|
| Inform police of your plans.
|
| Arrange for mail, newspapers, and packages to be picked up.
|
| Set timers for lights and radio.
|
| Turn phone bell down.
|
| Put valuables in safe deposit box. Put ladders, lawn furniture, etc. away.
|
| Activate alarm system.
|
| Lock all doors and windows.
|
| Have lawn cared for while away.
|
| Avoid publicity about travel plans.
|
| Tell answering service, if you have one, NOT to inform callers how long you'll be gone.
|
APARTMENTS
| Check for lighting in common areas.
|
| Check for grates on ground windows.
|
| Check locks on storage areas.
|
| Install deadbolts on exterior doors.
|
| Be aware of any special security features of the building.
|
| Know your neighbors and report any suspicious strangers to security.
