Home Security Checklist

GROUNDS
bulletConsider installing a fence around the property.
bulletTrim all shrubbery, especially if close to doors and windows.
bulletInstall exterior lighting.
bulletAvoid using trellises under windows.
bulletPut away tools and ladders that may be used by a thief or stolen

DOORS
bulletAdd a security strikeplate to prevent door from being kicked in.
bulletReplace doorknob locks with deadbolts.
bulletEntrance doors should be 1 1/2" thick minimum, made of solid wood or metal.
bulletChange doors with hinges on outside.
bulletUse a bar-type lock on sliding glass doors.
bulletRemember, locks can't work if not used.
bulletDon't forget to also lock garage door.
bulletConsider installing iron grates on street level windows. These should have a quick release for easy emergency exits. Never leave a key under mat or in the mailbox.
bulletNever give a copy of your key to maintenance or delivery people.
bulletRe-key all locks when moving into a new home or apartment.
bulletNever put I.D. tags on keys.

GENERAL
bulletCheck into neighbor watch and I.D. programs at your local police department.

 

WlNDOWS
bulletUse auxiliary locks on windows. Standard locks are easily sprung.
bulletInstall pin locks in wooden sash.
bulletLocks don't work if not used.

ALARMS
bulletConsider adding an alarm system. Consult an expert for advice.
bulletA barking dog makes a good alarm.

VACATION
bulletAsk a neighbor to watch your house.
bulletPlace shades at daytime level.
bulletTake any firearms to police to hold.
bulletInform police of your plans.
bulletArrange for mail, newspapers, and packages to be picked up.
bulletSet timers for lights and radio.
bulletTurn phone bell down.
bulletPut valuables in safe deposit box. Put ladders, lawn furniture, etc. away.
bulletActivate alarm system.
bulletLock all doors and windows.
bulletHave lawn cared for while away.
bulletAvoid publicity about travel plans.
bulletTell answering service, if you have one, NOT to inform callers how long you'll be gone.

APARTMENTS
bulletCheck for lighting in common areas.
bulletCheck for grates on ground windows.
bulletCheck locks on storage areas.
bulletInstall deadbolts on exterior doors.
bulletBe aware of any special security features of the building.
bulletKnow your neighbors and report any suspicious strangers to security.
