Sun Safety

The Lexington Health Department encourages sun safety in all seasons of the year.  Sun exposure causes at least 90% of all skin cancers.  One in every six Americans develops skin cancer at some point in life.  It is very important to protect skin from sun during adolescence and childhood because research shows a link between sunburns in children and an increased risk of melanoma and skin cancer later in life.  Ultraviolet rays reflect off water, sand, and snow.

Here's some hints for Sun Protection:

SLIP, SLOP, SLAP, WRAP!

SLIP, on a shirt when out in the sun.

SLOP, on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher on all exposed skin

SLAP, on a hat that shades the face, neck, and ears

WRAP, on sunglasses

Also look for shade in the middle of the day, use sunscreen every day to make it a habit.
