Mission Statement

The Engineering Division is committed to improving the quality of life throughout the Community. We strive to protect and enhance the Town’s infrastructure and buildings by fostering teamwork with the public and all Town Departments, and by maintaining an atmosphere in which independent and creative thinking can spawn solutions in convert with the highest engineering and performance standards.

Description of Services

The Engineering Division includes all engineering programs and supporting engineering services provided to divisions of the Department of Public Works, the Fire and Police Departments, School Administration, Council on Aging, Board of Appeals, Conservation Commission, Planning Board, Traffic Safety Committee, Transportation Advisory Committee, LexHAB, Permanent Building Committee, and other Town committees.

The Division is responsible for administering the Capital Budget for all Town infrastructure and buildings with the exception of the School Department buildings. A cooperative effort has been established to include some School Department projects in oversight contracts. The Division prepares and reviews plans, specifications, and bids for related building and construction projects, and is active in seeking grants. The Engineering Division inspects and keeps records concerning water, sewer, drain construction, and oversees water and sewer installation. Division staff also issues appropriate permits, inspects all subdivision construction for conformance to Town standards, and maintains public records concerning street lines, grades, land and lotting.

Traffic Safety

To more efficiently respond to residents’ traffic safety concerns, including traffic signage and crosswalks, a new procedure was initiated in late 2005 through collaborative efforts of the DPW and Police Department.

Under the new procedure, all traffic safety requests are first submitted to the Police Department to evaluate safety issues. A Traffic Safety Request Form (pdf) or Traffic Safety Request Form (doc) can be submitted electronically to Lieutenant Manuel Ferro mferro@ci.lexington.ma.us or mailed to Lt. Ferro’s attention at the Lexington Police Department, 1575 Mass Avenue, Lexington, MA 02420.

If you would prefer to discuss a traffic safety issue, please call Lt. Ferro at 781-861-1212.  If Lt. Ferro is not on duty at the time of your call, please ask Dispatch for his voice mail and leave the nature of your call and contact information.

For more traffic safety information please click through to the Police Department's Traffic Enforcement and Safety page.
