Mission
Statement
The Engineering Division is committed to improving the
quality of life throughout the Community. We strive to protect
and enhance the Town’s infrastructure and buildings by
fostering teamwork with the public and all Town Departments, and
by maintaining an atmosphere in which independent and creative
thinking can spawn solutions in convert with the highest
engineering and performance standards.
Description
of Services
The Engineering Division includes all engineering programs
and supporting engineering services provided to divisions of the
Department of Public Works, the Fire and Police Departments,
School Administration, Council on Aging, Board of Appeals,
Conservation Commission, Planning Board, Traffic Safety
Committee, Transportation Advisory Committee, LexHAB, Permanent
Building Committee, and other Town committees.
The Division is responsible for administering the Capital
Budget for all Town infrastructure and buildings with the
exception of the School Department buildings. A cooperative
effort has been established to include some School Department
projects in oversight contracts. The Division prepares and
reviews plans, specifications, and bids for related building and
construction projects, and is active in seeking grants. The
Engineering Division inspects and keeps records concerning
water, sewer, drain construction, and oversees water and sewer
installation. Division staff also issues appropriate permits,
inspects all subdivision construction for conformance to Town
standards, and maintains public records concerning street lines,
grades, land and lotting.
All map reproductions and/or plan research may be ordered by completing a
"Service Request" form. All requests must be in
writing. No telephone orders please.
All requests are filled in the order that they are received, usually by 10:00 a.m. the
next business day.

Permits
The Engineering Division issues Sewer
Connection Permits, Water Connection Permits, Right of Way
Permits, and Driveway Permits. Applications
for permits will be accepted in the Engineering Office from
8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a turn around time of approximately
48 hours. Applications can also be faxed to the
Engineering Office at (781) 863-2350. Permits will only be
issued from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and must be picked up at the
Engineering Office.
To more
efficiently respond to residents’ traffic safety concerns,
including traffic signage and crosswalks, a new procedure was
initiated in late 2005 through collaborative efforts of the DPW
and Police Department.
Under the new procedure, all traffic safety
requests are first submitted to the Police Department to evaluate
safety issues. A
