Mission Statement
The Parks and Forestry Division act
cooperatively with other Town Departments, user groups and
concerned citizens to enhance the quality of life for Lexington's
citizenry and employees. We support Town services and
recreational opportunities through proactive maintenance programs
designed to build community, preserve the Town's green character
and open spaces and promote public safety. The Cemetery
Division staff provides compassionate, courteous and professional
service to bereaved families and strives to maintain a tranquil,
well-maintained environment with perpetual care and beautiful
historic cemetery grounds.
Description of Services
The Public Grounds Division includes the Park,
Forestry and Cemetery
subdivisions. The Park subdivision maintains approximately 630 acres of Town-owned land,
including 9 parks, 9 playgrounds, 28 conservation areas, 41 athletic fields, 12 school
grounds, 4 tennis facilities, 3 historical sites, the pool and reservoir complexes, and
the Town's bicycle, fitness, and conservation trails. The assistance of local residents,
contractors and civic associations cooperatively helps to maintain 30 traffic islands.
Park personnel mow and trim cultivated turf areas, collect rubbish at parks and
playgrounds, weed, edge and mulch shrub beds, and prune shrubs. Park staff also constructs
and maintains bleachers, playground equipment, picnic tables, drinking fountains, fences,
and park and playground benches. Parks and Grounds staff maintain all sports fields and
turf areas including the mowing, trimming, fertilization, aeration, overseeding, sodding
and in some instances complete rebuilding of fields. Staff prepares and clean up for
special events and assist with snow plowing and the Christmas tree recycling program on an
as-needed basis. Parks and Grounds staff performs general upkeep and maintenance on the
pool facility and install and maintains the teak benches throughout town.
The Forestry subdivision plants and maintains trees on Town property. The
Forestry subdivision
maintains approximately 15,000 street trees, an undetermined number of trees on Park and
Conservation lands, and numerous shrub bed plantings on park, cemetery, school and
conservation properties and properties along public ways and routinely provides support to
the park subdivision. The objectives of the tree maintenance program are to identify and
reduce hazardous conditions that threaten public and private property, to resolve requests
for service and emergencies in a timely fashion and to increase the health of the urban
forest through planning and a proper maintenance program.
The Cemetery subdivision is responsible for the administration and upkeep of four
cemeteries: 21.5 acres in Westview Cemetery, 6.9 acres in Munroe, 1.28 acres in Colonial
(Ye Olde Burial Ground), and approximately half an acre in Robbins, a small family lot
on Massachusetts Avenue. An additional 28 acres is available for development in Westview
Cemetery. Cemetery staff handles burials, stone installations and the sale of burial lots.
They perform grounds keeping duties and maintain cemetery buildings and equipment.
Goals and Objectives
 | Invest in the infrastructure of athletic fields to improve the quality of each facility
while reducing scheduled maintenance costs. |
 | Maintain the landscapes at each of the Town's park and recreational facilities to
provide a consistent appearance without visible signs of deterioration. |
 | Prevent vandalism from detracting from the quality of maintenance and facility
appearance. |
 | Ensure the Public Grounds maintenance agenda accurately reflects the needs of its
customers. |
 | Reduce the liability of the Town by identifying and significantly reducing any existing
hazardous public shade tree that could threaten the public and/or private property,
pedestrians and vehicular traffic. |
 | Resolve resident and interdepartmental tree requests in a timely fashion |
 | Increase the health of the community's forest resource through proper maintenance
practices that promote the establishment of new plantings and the longevity and value of
existing mature trees. |
 | Promote
and support education/community outreach, citizen committees and volunteers. |
