Mission Statement
The Lexington Social Services Department provides a variety of social
services, including direct client services, support and referral related
to basic needs, promotion of health and well being, advocacy,
educational and family support programs, cultural outreach and
recreational programs for residents of all ages and backgrounds. In
collaboration with other Town and school departments, community groups,
and government agencies, the Lexington Social Services Department
identifies and works to provide appropriate programs and services in a
professional manner that respects the dignity of all individuals served.

Description of Services
The Social Services Department is
host to Lexington’s human and social services.
Services Offered
 | Crisis intervention, needs assessment, service coordination, and
information referral. |
 | Veterans’ Assistance
|
 | Financial Assistance
|
 | Senior Health Outreach Programs: Nursing
consultation, home visits and assessments. |
 | Blood Pressure Screenings offered in
conjunction with the Fire Department and Firefighters Local 1491.
|
 | Supportive Day Program is
a supervised day program designed to assist older individuals who
need support to continue to live at home.
The program is suitable for those with physical or memory
impairments.
The goal of the Adult Day Program is to provide an
interesting and stimulating daytime environment that encourages
independence, enhances social skills, and increases a sense of
competence.
The program strives to enrich the lives of its participants
in a warm and friendly setting.
It also provides transitional care during times when
families are looking for permanent placements in nursing or
assisted living facilities.
Finally, the Adult Day program provides the opportunity for
short periods of relief to families who care for older persons in
their homes.
Emotional support and guidance are offered to caregivers
and their families who are coping with stressful home situations. |
 | Nutrition/Meals on Wheels: The Senior Center's nutrition
program offers lunch daily for a donation of $2.00, with monthly
parties celebrating holidays, birthdays and special events. For
individuals who have difficulty shopping and cooking on their own,
Meals on Wheels are home delivered daily by volunteers |
 | Outreach to Chinese Seniors: Movies, lunch, social
programs, Chinese New Year celebrations. |
 | Senior Service Program: Seniors volunteer to work for
town and school departments in exchange for tax abatements. |
 | Friend to Friend: A program that offers friendly visits and
assistance with shopping. |
 | Community Action Groups: The Social Services Department is
also host to a variety of community action groups, which include:
the Enablement Committee--advocacy, support for people with
disabilities; the Fair Housing and Human Relations Committee and the
Human Services Committee. |
Senior Center
Activities for citizens 60 years of age and
older and those with disabilities, are found at the Lexington Senior
Center, 1475 Massachusetts Avenue. Activities at the Senior Center
are supported by the Council on Aging Board, appointed by the Town
Manager, and the Friends of the Council on Aging, a group who raises
funds and provides other support to the organization. The newsletter is published monthly, and all citizens 60 and older
are on the mailing list. Programming includes:
 | Classes/Shared Interests Groups: Extensive programming is
offered at the Senior Center, including volunteer led shared
interest groups, fee-for-service classes, exercise and games.

 | Finance/Health: Professionals in the fields
of health and finance lecture regularly. Podiatry services available.
|
 | Travel: Day and overnight trips to places of interest
in the Boston and New England area. |
 | Library/Fix-It Shop: A library, a video rental, and a Fix-It Shop, whose
volunteers repair household items for the community. |
 | AARP Income Tax Assistance: Offered by trained volunteers
during February, March and April. |
 | Medical Insurance Counseling: Offered by professionally
trained SHINE counselors. |
 | Support Groups for caregivers, people
suffering from Parkinson’s, prostate cancer and those who have been
widowed. |
